Trouble installing software with SuSE 10.2
I've started a new job and have been provided with a Linux work station. The problem? It is lacking many of the packages I need. Also, the IT people have jealous possession of the installation DVD (but for some reason have permitted me root access). Here are example of what I've run into:
I use emacs for some code and document preparation. However, it doesn't show up with "Install Software." When I download it and try to configure it, I get the following mesage:
pathname> ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
As for using the software installer, I always receive a message of the variety:
Transaction failed: Can't provide /suse/i586/<filename>.rpm from file:/
I've read through some of the other posts along this topic, but haven't seem to resolved the problem. Any advice out there?

Hmm I wonder why they don't have an installation server. What if you download the RPM files and try to install it that way? It looks like you need gcc. Try to install SMART and use that as your package manager.
I praise Webmin and PuTTy!
