Download and install Smart Package Manager and use it instead of Yast for installing packages. It's better and faster. Always go for RPM's as said above, and don't try a 'tarball' unless absolutely necessary. You will save yourself countless headaches. Yast or Smart resolve all dependencies for you downloading an RPM. Do you have your Installation Sources all setup?
