OpenSUSE is free (like Ubuntu).
Redhat is *not* free. The redhat spin-off Fedora is free.Registered Linux user #388328 || Registered LFS user #15880

What are the differences between Suse and OpenSuse?
- 05-13-2007 #4
SUSE is now the name of Novells enterprise distro and openSUSE is the free version developed by the openSUSE project. Since SUSE is based on stuff from openSUSE, they are quite similar but SUSE has some proprietary stuff thats not in openSUSE.

OpenSuSE is a good place to start with linux. Many things are configured for you out of the box but you will still find yourself doing the odd thing here and there that teach you more about the underpinnings of the linux system. Try not to think of free in terms of cost more in terms of freedom. With any GPL software you will always be able to access its source code so you can change it for your own purposes as you see fit (freedom) at no cost (free). Redhat and SuSE both allow you to do this but if you want their support you need to purchase the official product.

Well I still have my old Suse 9.1 Pro, but it is getting dated, and OpenSuse might be an option in the near future
