OpenSuse, BTInternet, and Mail .. please help me

    hi all,

my ISP, BTInternet requries authetication for SMTP, therefore I decided to go with the 'own server' approach, and I got one message sent from the WWW daemon, so I thought I could improve on it and get SendMail server installed, in doing this I removed PostFix, nothing worked, then removed that and tried again putting PostFix and it doesn't work now either.

    can you please help me?

why don't you just stick to pop3 and smtp and just get your email programme to use the pop3 (receiving email) settings for the outgoing email.

if you are using kmail just fill in the account details to authenticate your outgoing mail - you now have to do this with a bt email account (to help prevent spam)

i am typing this on a windows so can't type a step by step guide but if you have any problems please post back

    Ok quick and dirty

Menu-Internet-email client you will see several.

    for kmail

The first time you run it should ask you for the info
Assuming you did not enter thing right the first time

Go to Settings-configure Kmail-Accounts enter the correct vaules for your ISP here in both the recieving and sending tabs. Be sure to enter the correct password in each section if you ISP requires one.

Thunderbird is more or less the same but a different layout and you enter the password when you first make a connection
    GO to Edit - accounts

For kmail you need to do:-

    start kmail

click on the settings tab at the top

    select the configure kmail option

fill in the identity boxes (name & full email address name@btinternet.com)

then click on the next button down accounts

    for the sending tab complete

    1) your user name (just the bit before the @btinternet.com)

    2) the host is mail.btinternet.com

    3) leave the port number as 25

    4) put nothing in the precommand box

    5) put a tick in the box 'server requires authentication'

    6) for login put your user name

    7) your normal btinternet password
