    Automating Wireless Configuration

    Hi,

I'm still a linux newbie so I'm hoping to obtain a little bit of assistance with a nagging issue I'm having on OpenSuse v10.2. I don't have a linux supported wireless chip in my Lenovo N100 laptop (Broadcom BCM4310) however I've learned how to set it up via ndiswrapper. Wonderful! The issue I'm experiencing is I have to step through numerous commands in a terminal in order to get the wireless activated. Can someone direct me how to setup a script to start this automatically?

I looked at the posting by Oxygen on how to setup a wireless card in Suse 9.3 however I don't seem to have some of the config files he indicated in his posting, namely init.d or even \etc\boot. Below are the commands I usually type in to a terminal in order to activate my wireless card - I'm sure some of them are unnecessary however I'm still learning.

    modprobe ndiswrapper
    ifconfig wlan0
iwlist wlan0 scan scans wireless network interfacewka
iwconfig wlan0 essid "UVicOpen" to access UVicOpen wireless network
    iwconfig wlan0

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

If you are using 10.2, and your card is working,go into YaST and configure your card there.

Better yet, tell YaST that you wish to use NetworkManager and it will work automatically. You will have a system tray icon that will show you all available networks and allow you to connect and disconnect at the touch of a button.

    Wireless & Yast Control

    Hi Bigtomrodney,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I believe that I already have my wireless card configured in the NetworkManager - I have both the wired connection and the wireless configured there. Unfortunately it seems to give up after it first tries to acquire a network IP from the wired connection.

Is there something else I am suppose add / edit in order to force Suse to check the wireless connection after first checking the wired connection? Or maybe switch the order in which they appear in NetworkManager (i.e. wireless first then wired)? Are there specific config files I can check to verify that my wireless is loaded automatically?

Thanks again for any help you can provide - much appreciated.

In yast, network cards, edit your wireless card (essid, wep, etc) and in the hardware details options specify as module name "ndiswrapper". This should get it working

    Thanks for the suggestion Valemon.

I believe I already have the ndiswrapper specified in the settings for my wireless card but I'll check again when I get home. I might just delete the card and reset everything to see if that makes any difference.

    Thanks again....I'll lick this yet!!
