Wink Windows Remote Share mounted to Linux

I have 2 PCs. One desktop with WindowsXP and a Laptop with Linux. Both are wirelessly connected to the same router. I want to be able to browse and use those resources from my Linux machine. In other words I want to create a local network with my Linux, in such a way that I will be able to browse windowsxp shares too.

Any suggestions? Relevant URLs and HOWTOs??

Search google for "samba". Samba is what lets Linux talk the "smb" protocol that windoze uses for their file sharing.

You probably already have samba installed on your suse box. Check for it in yast -> software -> software managment -> search for "samba".

After you have it installed, you can search google for "samba suse" and it will pull back a lot of sites that explain how to set up shares and connect to other shares. Here's a descent site:

Setting up Samba - SUSE Wiki

Also, look into downloading a nice GUI network browser called "smb4k" (assuming you are running KDE instead of Gnome). It is pretty nice. This doesn't help you share anything but rather see other shares on your network. You can download the "smb4k-*.rpm" file and then from a command prompt, cd to the directory that has the rpm file and type in "rpm -i smb4k-*.rpm" and it will install. You can click on your suse menu and search for "smb4k" and the icon for it should appear.

This is for an older version of SuSE but the samba configuration part is still valid.

Take a look guys at Webmin

The webmin tool is quite comprehensive. You can administer everything in your linux PC locally from your web browser, even through https.

My bad, I didnt change the setting "security: USER" to "security: SHARE". Now t's all good.

How though can I make it NOT hash a file when i want to play it? For example an mp3 file, or even a movie?
