10.1 Need to configure parallel port scanner into SANE with front and back ends-sorry, do not know how to do it, advice pls both ends available, need to config the lot manually, cos it only does USB and SCSI automatically. Scanner does have a SCSI connection, but I've no card.

I configured an old Optic Pro parport in Suse - but could only run it as root from Kooka.
If you add the scanner in Yast > Hardware - there's quite an extensive list of scanners.

that's about as useful to me as tits to a bull. It tells me nothing I haven't tried or done, and provides no solution. I'm no programmer, & I don't understand the language or syntax of linux. My C skills are very limited, but IF I was given what I asked for I could replicate it. I asked for DETAILED instructions-not feelgood crap. please don't waste our brainpower with fruitless gabble.

I don't think a response like that is going to get you much help.

The fact is that some scanners simply do not have drivers in Linux. I suggest you find a scanner that is supported which are many.

APPOLOGIES TO All!!! Very Sorry for offenses given. xsane does work via 'root'. with all necessary parts and outputs. thank you v much!! Now, can I make it work in "user" or some other group, & if not, pls explain (to stop me being silly and trying to do something not allowed). NB There was a major caution saying I was "On my own" if I continued to use the program as user 'root'. Ta V much! 1408:27:05:2007

I for one would be curious to know just what it is that you did to get the unit to be recognized by ROOT.

I have a similar hardware/software set up and I can't get ROOT to recognize that there is even a scanner attached via a USB - but it does show up as, of all things, a camera.

For now, it's got me stumped.

Mine was parallel port and my new USB HP was picked up straight away so I may not be the right one to ask. Are you in openSUSE?
If so, try Yast->Hardware->Scanner - select the 'camera' (which I assume should be your scanner?) and click edit. You should then get an extensive list of scanners to choose from. I f yours is there pick it out and follow the rest of the prompts. That's how I got the old parport one to work.
Maybe it will work for you.
