NVidia 7600GS and new drivers

I'm done guys. The system refuses to load the new drivers and the generic driver gives me lousy graphics. I had a Radeon 9200SE that was working great with the generic driver. I changed it last night for the new NVidia. At first Suse wouldnt even give me an X Window. I surmounted that and ended up with generic driver and lousy graphics. So, I decided to download the NVidia drivers the 'easy way', with Yast. First updated the Kernel from 2.6.18.8-0.1-default to 2.6.18.8-1.ccj45 ( which is what NVidia show was what his drivers were ready for. I downloaded the new kernel-source, I made sure I had gcc and then downloaded 'x11-video-nvidia' and 'nvidia-gfx-kmp-kernel flavor'. Then proceeded to configure Xorg with 'sax2 -r' as root. That brought me to the screen to conf my resolution and monitor. Both, the Monitor and the video card appeared well recognized, but clicking OK and testing different resolutions brought only errors. At the end I'm still with generic drivers and lousy graphics. Can anyone help me please?

After installing the new card and before installing the NVIDIA driver did you run sax2 to inform the system of the new hardware?

When you installed the NVIDIA drivers did you get errors?

Did you follow these instructions?

People who aren't afraid of recompiling the nvidia kernel module or
even reinstalling the nvidia driver each time the kernel has been
updated and want or need to use the latest and greatest nvidia driver
can use the following steps 1-3. The others should use the
instructions above using YaST and skip the steps below.

1) Kernel sources must be installed and configured. Usually this means
installing the 'kernel-source', 'make' and 'gcc' packages with YaST2.

2) Use the nvidia installer for 1.0-9746.

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run -q

3) Configure X.Org with

sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!)

NOTE: There is no need to try to enable 3D support. It's already
enabled, when the nvidia driver is running.

IMPORTANT: You need to recompile and install the nvidia kernel module
after each kernel update.

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run -K

I was never able to get the Yast method to work!!!!

You are right. It didn't work for me either! I have everything I need to have: new kernel, new kernel-source, gcc, make, autoconf,etc. Up to now I followed microchip method:
init 3
cd /usr/src/linux && make prepare && make modules_prepare
sh /path/to/driver/nv-driver.run

But I found the following errors after the first lime of code:
*** You have not yet configured your kernel!
***
*** Please run some configurator (e.g. "make oldconfig" or "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" )

I was also using 9755 instead of 9746. I will try your method. Do I need to place the driver in a special place? Also, where do I get 9746?. NVidia only gives you the chance of getting 9755 or some Legacy driver. Any advice before I proceed with 9755?

Ok, uninstall the the stuff you did first time via Yast. I think it is confusing things and is why the Yast method did not work. Yast only did part of the install. Download the driver from NVIDIA should be named

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-XXXX-pkg1.run

Where XXXX is the version. (yes the instructions are a bit dated I copied them a while back from the NVIDIA site so that I'd have them if stuck in console mode after a kernel update)

It does not matter where you put things. I have a folder on my desk top called "install" that I put all the stuff that may be needed when a kernel update happens complete with text instructions.

Hello gogalthorp! You are exactly right. That's the line that works at the end. Yast doesn't work! You have to do it manually. I have to confess that I also had help in another forum, but they reach the same conclusion as you. Thanks a lot. My graphics are working and outstanding. 9755 works BTW.

That's the version I use also the instructions are just a little out of date.
