newbie having trouble with install not taking all cd's

    Hello,

I am new to all this Linux, but want to learn more about it.

I am installing 10.2 GNOME ( I tried KDE with same results) on an HP
    Netserver LC3

PII 350 256 MB ram 20 GB SCSI HD

    My questions are

1.. When I am installing using Yast in text mode it list 3 cd's, but only
    installs from one of them.
2.. When the first cd was listed as done, I tried to put in the next cd,
but the cd drive would not open, and Yast just took off, and "completed" the
    install.
I could not get to the point to define user or passwords. configure IP
    address, or computer name..etc.

3.. On reboot when the OS comes up I get a screen with the chameleon on it
a dialog box with no information, but it is waiting for some input.
There is also a small text scroll output box on the lower left side of the
screen, stating something about dns information not available.
    Thanks for any ideas

When I boot in failsafe mode the login prompt (text mode) appears, but I
never had a chance to configure a user, or password at install, so how do I
    login in failsafe mode.?

    Any help is appreciated.

Assuming you downloaded the ISO images and burned them yourself, did you do a cksum on the ISOs? Also, did you check the CD's for being burned correctly? I think openSUSE gives you this option when booting from the cd... media check or something.

newbie having trouble with install not taking all cd's

    Kahoona,
    Thank you for your time.
Yes, I verified the checksums. The function in Yast that checks the cd's did the same thing operationally, meaning it verified the 1'st cd, but I could not get the drive to open in order to place the next cd in.
    Question:
During install when Yast is loading the 1'st cd you see it counting down the number of packages. When the first is done it states"DONE", then I cannot get my cd drive to release the cd so I can install the others.
Am I doing something incorrect here? Is there some comand to eject the 1'st cd?
As i stated I can boot in failsafe mode, but i am asked for a login that i never configured.

Sounds like you have a flaky drive. I assume you pressed the hardware eject button on the drive???? How is the CD connected IDE?? If so be sure that the drive is connected to the second position on the cable and configured to be the slave or better if you have a second IDE controller (most do) place the CD drive on the second control ie on its own cable as the first device and and configured as the master.

newbie having trouble with install not taking all cd's

    Golgalthorp,
    Thanks for the reply.
I had a vga card with little vid ram, so I keep getting text mode install.
I found a vga card with more ram, and the install worked fine.
Go figure. I can't understand why the vga card would stop me from putting the next cd in during setup.

    Thanks again for your thoughts.

I think things like kernel source and compiler stuff for the most part. But you will eventually need it (things like 3d drivers etc) though you can install it from the net if you have a basic system working and a net connection.

the Add on has proprietary stuff on it ie non FOSS.

My felling is you are going to want most of this stuff eventually so why not just download all the CD's?
