You don't need to download the addon CD, but I would recommend it. It contains a lot of extra (proprietary) code, such as mp3 codecs, adobe pdf reader, etc.
If you have nothing against closed source software, I'd recommend d/loading it.Registered Linux user #388328 || Registered LFS user #15880

Wine is normally installed by default unless you would not want it.

i plan on makin openSUSE my only operating system on all computers, i just want:
printers to work (they're network printers on windows)
i might need microsoft office 2 work (it depends on the future of openoffice.org)
i need all my games to work (aa, msfsx, comand & conquer 3, and stuff like that)
i need all my usb stuff to work (nostromo n52, saitek aviator joystic, and..
i need all my internall hardware to work, i'll have a geforce 8800gts and a nice sound card.
oH and my mouse & keyboard. g5(mouse) and g15(keyboard)
if i am told that everything here (except microsoft office) will work it will be my mainframe, if not i'll have to dual boot.

Well games may or may not work under wine. Yes you can run them from an icon but the icon will not automagicly appear you must set it.
You might want to check out Crossover for MS Office
CodeWeavers
not free
The hardware totally depends on exactly what hardware you have. In my experience most USB stuff works. But I'm not a gamer.
Here is a starting place for wine
