Check the checksum of the ISO be sure it agrees with the one from the site you downloaded from.
There is not much to know about dual booting. Just allow enough space unformated to take the Linux install on the drive. I'd say 10 gigs at minimum. If you have the space take 30 gig or more.
That usually means that you need reduce the size of the Windows partition. You can use Partition Magic (Windows based) or gparted (Linux based) or some other partition manager to downsize Windows .
The installer will create the needed partitions in the free space and install grub over the windows boot. Then when you boot you will get a boot screen that will allow you to boot to Linux or Windows.
As for any major change in a system you should always backup important information in case anything goes wrong.
If you are installing Windows at the same time install windows first and only let it have a part of the disk leave enough free unpartitioned space for Linux then install Linux.

After you install SuSE it will create a menu when you boot where you can choose either Windows or Linux. Just try it! followoing gogalthorp advises

Here's a quick "tutorial" about dual booting Win XP and Suse 10.2:
Dual boot: Windows XP & openSuSE 10.2
You can find a lot of "tutorials" like this if you google with something like "dual boot WinXP Suse 10.2"
Regarding the installation issue you have, maybe the CD is damaged (scratched etc) or something went wrong during burning process. Try to burn it again and try to do it at a higher speed (if your writer unit supports it).
