Smile compaq presario v3000 on opensuse 10.2 noob to noob

just for the fun of it i decided to hook this machine up with this distro and i do say it aint at all bad. dare i say it it really went well.
for any newbie who's got a killer machine like this don lose hope on gettin anything to work. played around with it for a week and i do say i finally got it right.just the keypoints

    few hints:
first make sure the system updates at the end of install so that you have the latest kernel modules on your machine. you might have to update through yast using the relevant repos.
this helps a lot especially when you have to install nvidia graphics cards later.

for the nvidia i used the hard way showed on the nvidia wiki. the easy way just breaks the thing. trust me i had to reinstall as i hdnt backed up my xorg.conf.

i dloaded and used the driver:
    NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run -q
then all you do is logout
    press ctrl alt f1
login as root on the blackscreen
    init 3 this kills xserver
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run -q
    follow installation
And if you haven’t set up your xorg.conf yet:

    sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia

for beryl i used the guide at beryl wiki
    Beryl - openSUSE
i used the beryl with xgl option which they say is more stable.
just do it step by step as they say. got a bit scared when the screen became a bit fuzzy and wasn't so sure about the command at the end for enabling xgl
    but nontheless everything was fine.

for the wireless broadcom i used ndiswrapper for this machine and it really works good.
its quite simple download the latest drivers from hp Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver*Compaq Presario V3010US Notebook PC

use cabextract to unpack the stuff ie. using console go to the folder where you saved the file cd..... then

    cabextract sp33008.exe
    then:
just in case you might have been tinkerin before AND just to make sure

    GOT THIS FROM WES:
make sure that bcm43xx is not installed
With su powers, do a lsmod | grep bcm43xx.
If you get a response, remove it with rmmod bcm43xx.
The last thing you'll have to do is blacklist it ( if it was installed) enter "blacklist bcm43xx" at the end of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.

    then

    GOT THIS FROM JASONDODD:

    through yast install ndiswrapper

copy extracted bcmwl5.inf and bcmwl5.sys to my home directory.
in terminal, cd to ~/home (where its all saved)
    >ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf

    >ndiswrapper -l shows driver name....harware installed

    >modprobe ndiswrapper
    >lsmod to check installation of module
    >ndiswrapper -m to create link
    >depmod -a

ifconfig or iwconfig should show you the card. then

Then in Yast network devices add "wireless" doing nothing but placing 'ndiswrapper' in the module text area.

i selected 'managed' network with open authentication (depends on your specification)
clicked on knetwork manager and selected the network i wanted to connect to(homenetwork).
    it was wokin proper.

its workin ok for now so i think it should be good. hope it works for you.damn this 3d desktop is hot!!
tried as much as i could to keep it short and simple.
try as best you can fellow noobies.

    Excellent. Just a small comment

You should be able to get back to the vesa driver if 3d driver install is botched bu running this

    sax2 -r -m 0=vesa

    Or you can replace the

    Section "Device"
    BoardName "GeForce 6800 XT"
Driver "nvidia" <- this line ie the current driver name
    line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf with

    Section "Device"
    BoardName "GeForce 6800 XT"
    Driver "vesa"

    Cool broadcom wireless bcm43xx

now for a month now i've been workin on this bloody chipset on opensuse 10.2 and i thought i was goin to send the distro down to hell with all the stress it caused me.
i had to reinstall at some point and lo and behold i lost wireless connectivity.
i did more than five reinstalls with just to get a clean install but i ended up with the 28% error message on knetwork manager.
so on a hunch i decided to charge my router which was a netgear wireless router (54mbps wireless adsl2 with double firewall security)and use the aircruiser g desktop router which is so simple and dint even look like it would work in the first place, and guess what the netgear router was the problem all along. so just make sure you have the router workin proper b4 you send your distro down to hell.

keep workin guys am even using encryption successfully on knetwork manager.so noone is messin around with ma wireless connection. this thing can work.and i'm living proof. thank God!!
