Question SUSE 10.1 Missing Title Bar!!

I have the problem in which every time I restart or shutdown my machine, upon restart, my title bar disappears. I cannot minimize, maximize, or close the windows. My temporary fix for it is to log out and log back in and it seems to fix the problem. I am using SUSE Linux 10.1 with GNOME and xgl and compiz installed. I am wondering if anyone has encountered a similar problem. I looked through the forums and have not encountered the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There seems to be a lot of problems with the 3d desktops going around. My suggestion is to remove XGL and live with a simple desktop. Or in KDE you can have multiple desktops. But all the three D stuff is at best beta. If you live on the bleeding edge prepare to be cut. If you have just the right hardware, the right versions, everything might work just great.

You might try an older or newer version.

I see, thank you for the information. I will keep the 3D desktop I suppose, its just a minor inconvenience to log out and back in, but not enough to curtail my enjoyment of the 3D desktop. I appreciate the help.

What graphic card do you have?
Have you installed the right drivers for it?
Please post more info about this.

I have two eVGA nvidia 7600 GTs and i have the "SLI" "Enabled" in the conf file.
I believe I have installed the correct drivers, right off YaST2 from the nvidia repository. I can provide more info if needed.

I have found it better to download and install the NVIDIA drivers directly. What frame rates do you get if you run glxgears ( the default size)? ie are you sure that the driver is running?

    glxgears gives:
    45404 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9069.858 FPS
    44827 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8947.470 FPS
    50935 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10185.706 FPS
    49759 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9951.800 FPS
    45524 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9104.795 FPS
    41869 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8372.121 FPS
    49920 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9979.598 FPS
    48903 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9779.094 FPS
    48510 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9699.356 FPS
    50987 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10183.789 FPS
    51300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10247.507 FPS
    50712 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10126.761 FPS
    50923 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10179.708 FPS
    50751 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10141.794 FPS

and in glxinfo, it says (direct rendering : no) yet the 3D desktop effects all work except for the title bar. Once again, If I log out and back in, the problem is fixed and the title bar is displayed and all 3D effects work. Kind of an issue no?

Well the driver is installed, but it is odd I think that you get almost the exact frame rates as I do with a single 6800 based card

I wonder if it is an issue with SLI? In any case I'd suggest reporting the problem to the XGL developer community so they may fix the problem in the future or know some hack to fix it.

    Maybe you can try Beryl

    Beryl - openSUSE

It turns out my card, the nvidia 7600 GT is not on the "supported" list, perhaps that is the explanation. Oh well, guess I will have to live with the small inconvenience of logging out to get my title bar back.
