SUSE 10 installation failed kinternet update

When I installed SUSE 10 from the DVD, the network setup and configuration failed when it said doing test and online update. The fail message has KInternet mentioned, even though I chose GNOM Desktop.

The installation completed fine. Everything seems to work except for the network. I can't get the LAN connection to work. ping doesn't work. I looked for KInternet and it was not installed.

I used rpm to install the kinternet rpm and also the kde3pim-networkstatus library. After that, kinternet is in /opt/kde3/bin. When I tried to run it, it complained about a share library libkinit-kinternet.so, which I found in /opt/kde3/lib/. At this point, I'm not sure if I'm doing the right things anymore. Why is it so hard to get the network working?

Any idea what I can do? Should I use KDE instead of GNOM? If yes, can I just switch the window manager to KDE? How do I do that?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Don't know about your network problems but yes you can have both KDE and gnome installed. Just go to Yast change search to packages then select the KDE package. YOu will then need to insert your CD/DVD

Thanks! I've installed KDE. Now I can start and see the KInternet plug icon on the top menu bar. Although, Dial-up is still not working.

Maybe you know how I can switch from GNOME to KDE? After the installation, I rebooted the machine but it still starts in GNOME. There must be some way to specify which one to start.

Tried both WLAN connection and Dial-Up

I've tried both. At work, I have ethernet connection to a LAN. Did configure the ethernet card. But, couldn't get it to work.

At home, I use Dial-Up to call from the modem. After I entered user ID and passwd, nothing happened. Where do I look for log messages from KInternet?

    Thanks!

Log out- this will bring you to a log in screen click at the bottem left it will give you a choice of GUI's to start. You can set the default there also.
