No Internet after 24 hours
Hello All, This is rather strange, I am up on windows but Linux is new to me but have never had this with two other distros that I have tried.
24 hours ago I installed Open Suse 10.2 purchased from a reliable source all went surprisingly well it found the network card and the internet and updated all patches also I configured email & news reader, now tonight I cannot connect to the router to get out! I have 6 pc's at home all windows with no problem, I have looked at the control panel of my router in the DHCP section to find that the linux pc has "Expired" in terms of the lease time and will not renew! other pc's renew after 24 hours. To try to make this a bit shorter I have adjusted the lease time to 365 days and it looks as though I will have to wipe the linux pc and reinstal the O/S as I have tried all permutations of settings for the network card to no avail, if I reinstal at least I will know I have a year to sort it out unless you kind people can suggest where I have gone wrong, I am reluctant to do anymore messing with the router as it is used all the time by the family and has worked perfectly for over 5 years non stop.
Thanks in advance..

Welcome to the forum!
Reinstalling the OS to sort out an internet problem seems a little extreme
From a command prompt try this (you'll need to be root),Where X is the number of the ethernet port you're using to get online. If you don't know that, you can find out with the followingCode:ifconfig ethX down ifconfig ethX up
ifconfig operates in approximately the same way as ipconfig in Windows.Code:ifconfig

Try to renew your DHCP lease manually, something like this
dhcpcd eth0
or
dhclient eth0Put your hand in an oven for a minute and it will be like an hour, sit beside a beautiful woman for an hour and it will be like a minute, that is relativity. --Albert Einstein

Thanks Guys
After a few hours I went into Yast/network devices/network card and changed the option "User controlled with network manager" to "Traditional method with ifup" as soon as I did this and looked at my router dhcp panel I could see that the lease time is now 365 days at last..
I did try your suggestions but had no luck with the terminals (all three of them) they did not want to know.. its me not used to this..
Thanks anyway guys..and thanks for the welcome I have an idea that I will be here asking questions quite a lot!!!

Not sure why this solved you're problem, but it's good it did it.

A reason might be that an old utility like "ifub" could recognize better your router than newer tools/methods; as you said, you've been using this router for 5 years now, so its quite an old router ... but a good one since it's still working fine.
You're solution might help other people too, so well done!

If it does help anyone else the router is a BT Voyager 200 and I must admit that I have not tried to update any software for it from BT as it works so well, I also have a new BT Voyager 210 as a standby, I would never hear the last of it If we could not get on the internet!!
