    Shell 'ls' colors

I'm trying to change the colors used by 'ls' in the shell, but am having no success fixing a problem I'm having. Currently it looks as though writable directories are highlighted with a GREEN background. If I 'chmod a-w ./directory' and do an 'ls' afterwards, it shows as blue foreground, with the green highlight removed. The green background is driving me nuts and I'm trying to remove it. I made a copy of /etc/DIR_COLORS into ~/.dir_colors and have modified it to verify that changes to the file actually changed the displayed colors in the shell. Changes do indeed change colors. The problem I'm having is I can't find ANYWHERE in .dir_colors that would specify a green background for writable directories! A '42' should set the background color to green, but the only place '42' is anywhere in the document is in the color code comments. Anyone have any idea what is causing the green background and how to remove it?

    thanks,
    Ctretsch
