    Intel 5356EP modem not working

    Hello all,

I know nothing about linux and have used windows for a few years but I don't really like it. I decided to get a set of 5 CD's for openSUSE 10.2. So far I like what I see and am intrigued by this type of computing. I will still keep windows but I hope to be able to use it less and less as time passes. I have only one problem with my install and that is I can't configure my modem. It is one of those dreaded `Winmodems' and I wish I didn't have it. I have downloaded a driver called `Intel-536ep-4.69-10.src.rpm' and tried to get this to work. The attachment is what happens when I type make 536:

The last line says it all. All of this is meaningless to me. I tried adding `kernel source' files from the CD but this didn't seem to make any difference. Perhaps purchase of a linux compatible serial external modem would be a simple solution to all this. Can anyone recommend one. Also does your ISP make any difference. I am with virgin.net. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Looks like you don't have the gcc compiler installed.

Also be sure that you have the kernel source installed

Thanks for the reply gogalthorp. I'll install the gcc compiler and see if that works.

    Thanks again

I had your exact problem but with SuSE 10.0, which i struggled with for weeks ( or was it months). I eventually gave up and bought a serial modem and if i were to advise you I would say save your time ( and your sanity ) and do the same.

The link below is to the modem i currently use, which has posed no problems whatsoever .
