Xorg not allowing to switch to ttys

Hi All I am running SuSE 10.0 on a Sony Vaio. The problem is that after starting the X server (Xorg 6.8.2) I cannot switch to any of the virtual consoles (Ctrl Alt Function Keys). I checked the xorg.conf for DontAllowVT but it is commented. The problem does not exist when X server is stopped. Just in case someone thinks this has something to do with X kbd settings that might be mapping the function keys to somewhere else, I think that is not the case, caz when I press F1 in KDE help opens up.

More to add....just installed SuSE 10.0 from the same CDs on a desktop and this problem was not observed on it.....

Any guesses now? This behaviour has nothing to do with me editing xorg.conf since I have been experiencing this since the start.

Thanks in advance for any help....

Oh...so sorry for not mentioning the config properly....nvidia card (GeForce Go 7400) with official proprietary drivers.

Due to some reasons I had to reinstall SuSE. This time I did not install the nvidia drivers but still the problem remains.....guess that rules Nvidia drivers out...Any suggestions now?

The only time I have seen this problem was on a system with a DVI connection to the monitor. The thing was you could switch VTs before X started but not after.

The LCD is directly connected to my laptop I don't know if deep within DVI drives it....but I am certainly not using dual-head.....can I make some changes in the xorg.conf (attached below....comments stripped)?

In this file I am using nvidia drivers but even with the standard vga drivers I was facing this problem...
