Just in case if it is necessary (Honestly i dont know, im sorry)

How do i install video/audio codecs for linux?? How do i upgrade any software or package?? I know it can done using YAST, but i would like to do it manually. So that i can learn. Should i install CVS??
If someone is kind enough, please give some examples.

Have a look at this page.

You could probably find the *.rpm file from the net for w32codecs or enable the correct repositories in YaST and download it from there, which is the recommended option.

What is the use of CVS???

CVS is a version control repository. This is source code! As a new user you need to stay away from it. Use the binary repositories for your distro as listed in the link from devils_casper.

I'd say it's best to learn the basics about a system before you try programming it. If you really want to get your head into things go try out Linux From Scratch which is a detailed site dedicated to helping you build your own Linux from ground up. Then you might look into the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. Obviously to help coding on the Linux kernel you can download the sources from kernel.org and you'd need to know the C programming language pretty well...
