New Install, no detect serial port? Manual setup??

New instal of SuSE, but YaST GUI hardware interface detects no serial ports.

Dell desktop 4600, converted from MS XP.

Tips on why no automatic serial detection? Can I probe the port or set it up manual?

Thanks for any tips and help!

Did you ever use the serial port with windows??

The reason I ask is that if the answer is no its likely that the port is disabled in your BIOS settings. If i were you i'd check this first.

Thanks for the tip, I checked the bios and it was set for "Auto" so I thought we might be on to something. I set it manually, I had the options of Com-1 or Com-3, I set for Com-1 but no help, still Linux has detected the port. Any program just says it's not unavailable or locked.

Any suggestions? I assume the OS will detect the port with no serial device attached??

Which programs and what error messages did they give?

[QUOTE=the bassinvader;482644]So has Linux detected the port??
My typo, I see NO port detected under YaST > Hardware > Hardware Information. The applications I am trying both run under wine.

Multiview 2000, error message "the requested com port COM1 does not exist on this machine. Same message for any port, not able to browse any ports from GUI.

Similar message from a amateur radio control application.

I think to look at the wine configuration, but first I am trying to confirm the detection in the OS before going to the software, process of elimination., I have always started at machine level.

How and where would serial ports be listed under YaST Hardware Info?

Any system commands I can use to "ping" or probe the port?

Thanks for being paitien, I am a Linux newbie.

Does not look like you have any recognizable serial ports. Lots of USB ports though. Looks like Dell did something funky with this motherboard.

Ok, thanks, Just wanted to be sure I was not over looking something. If I installed a serial port card, would the system automatically detect it?
