    Networking Issues

    I'm a total Linux novice.

Anyway, just successfully installed OpenSUSE on my Dell laptop, but am running into networking issues. I have both a NIC and a Wifi adapter on the computer. I opened up firefox (and konqueror) and got no Internet, so I went into the settings on both cards and noticed that my wired connection had an IP address while my wireless did not.

Since I obviously had a connection to the network (the Router - DHCP server - had assigned my wired connection an address) I tried to ping my router. It succeeded in the ping, but it wasn't pinging the router as I thought it would. Instead of the router prompt, I got the linksys prompt for a switch that I have dasiy-chained onto the router. So basically I THINK the issue is that Linux can't communicate with my router. Any ideas for me? Thanks a lot. I'm very new to Linux so GUI instructions would be appreciated so I can easily undo and redo anything.

May be worth trying to connect directly to the router (instead of having laptop---switch---router change the cables round so you get laptop---router), since that should help to isolate whether the problem is definately between the laptop and the router, or whether the switch is intervening where it shouldn't be.

I did. Sorry i didn't make that clear in the earlier post. Basically, my wired connection is plugged into the router, but when i ping 192.168.1.1 the linksys switch prompt is opened up instead of the router prompt. Additionally, the wireless card in my laptop works (or seems to), it just cant see any wireless networks. In other words it looks like for whatever reason, linux doenst like my router....any other suggestions? All the windows boxes on the network see the router correctly

Its a WRT54G linksys router and the switch is a BEFSR41 (actually also a router, but I have it in uplink/switch mode).
