system hang
Hi
I am using the 64 bit version of opensuse 10.2 on a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ with 1GB memory mounted on a M2V-TVM ASUS motherboard. My system is hanging from time to time (even with no jobs running). The only way out is to force shutdown the system.
My system also has the strange property that when it is shutdown it has to be given a 30-45 minutes rest before it can be restarted which I believe is the time taken by the CPU to cool down.
I live in Kolkata and my experience has been gathered in summer only. The computer was bought in April 07. It is extremely hot (35-40 degs) and humid.
My vendor tells me that it is an OpenSuse 10.2 (64 bit) feature which is being encountered by many systems.
Does anybody have the same experience with a similar configuration?
It would be a great help if somebody could shed some light.
Thanks
Tilak

it may be the processor or something in the motherboard that may not be as compatible for your system. I had a celeron processor in my old computer, that when it just sat there doing nothing, it got really really really really hot. It eventually blew my system up! I built my own computer and I am back on again. But it may be something installed in the motherboard. Like the hard drive, processor, memory or whatever.

When a modern processor gets too hot it will shut down. Sounds like you need a better cooler fan/heat sink. Note you can also adjust shutdown and alarm temps in the BIOS.

I would replace the CPU fan and heatsink, and ensure that the thermal conduction paste is applied correctly. You can seriously damage components that are not cooled correctly.

thanks
Thank you very much for the info and tips !!
I figured out yesterday that my system actually has the i386 version of the OS ..... I was wondering if that could be the reason for the malfunction since my processor is 64bit.

Dear Devils_Casper,
Thanks for making me aware of the fact that its not because of the 64-32 bit issue.
My vendor has promised me to put the heat sink paste tomorrow .... lets see what happens.
Best
