    Desktop Not Running

I just installed Suse 10.2 on my laptop, having recently installed it on several PCs. On the laptop, I was never asked to set a password. When I boot after installation, rather than taking me into KDE like the PCs, it stops at a 'Linux login:' and I have no idea how to login or to get the desktop to start up.

    TIA for your help.

It means Installation hasn't completed and something went wrong during installation.

    try this:
Highlight Suse title in GRUB menu and type single. Hit Enter key. SuSe will boot up in Single User mode and drop you at shell prompt. Execute passwd command and assign root password. Reboot machine and login as root with new password.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Thanks, Casper

Changing the password that way does help ... at least I can log on now. I was afraid it might be an incomplete installation as I have made several attempts, apparently unsuccessful, to update the installation. I originally tried to install on my work laptop from the CDs since it doesn't have a DVD drive and got several errors installing modules from the 2nd CD. So I brought in my personal external DVD and did an update ... may have to do a new installation from scratch

If everything is working fine then no need to re-install. Check if SuSe throws any error while running application.

Well, it still doesn't boot into kde. I'm about 1/2 way through a fresh install now.

Finally got it running. Had to let the installtion rerun again (after another fresh install), select Other Options rather than New Installation or Update, and let it repair some things.
