Exclamation OpenSuse 10.2 (Problems with O/S screen), Urgent, Thanks

I am very eager to use SUSE Linux on my desktop and start using it as my primary operating system. However, I am facing great difficulty viewing the desktop after my successful installation. First, I decided to avoid the hassle and install Suse Linux with its standard software. After a successful installation, I configured the updates and the hardware configuration. Lastly, after clicking Finish where the page says, "Congratulation’s, Have lots of fun, etc," I noticed my screen trying to log into the desktop, however; I end up seeing a black screen with my curser invisible (visible unless I move it). To me, it seems like there is no response, and my cursor turns into an x that I drag along the screen. Therefore, after several installation attempts, does anyone have a clue what can be the problem? Please help, thank you all in advance.

Just to let you know, I am dumping Microsoft Windows out the Windows, lol. In addition, I don’t want to think of Linux the same way. Thanks.

I assume you have just a blank screen with an X on it.

Press esc this should bring up a console ie text. See if there is any error messages if so post them.

BTW what is the hardware ie computer make model what video card etc.

My monitor is VGA-based Compaq CV735 CRT-monitor with a NVIDIA 6600GT graphics card. For some odd reason, I reinstalled the O/S, and the same issue appears. However, I forced a refresh on my monitor and the O/S loaded with its sounds/whistles. Now the only problem is that the GUI looks fuzzy in a way that I had to configure my own background manually, and that the maximum resolution is 800x600. However, I remember using 1280x1040, etc. I can't even see the OpenSUSE Logo on the start button. Is this normal, or do I have to install the latest NVIDIA drivers?

try to edit Section "Device" in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

change the driver to"vesa" and restart X.

If you can getback GUI install Nvidia drivers using yast by fallowing procedure given Here

Vesa driver doesn't work well with nVidia Cards. You must be using "nv" Driver right now. I would suggest you to install Nvidia Driver for better performance.
Make sure to use supported HorizSync and VertRefresh rates.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Also did you configure the graphics card and monitor in Yast?

YAST-Hardware-Monitor graphics card Select your monitor and resolution and then run the sax2 setup (you'll be asked when you save and quit the screen) this will allow you to adjust the size and position. Then reboot I suspect Linux is not detecting your monitor correctly.

I have never had problems with the vesa driver with my 6800 based card. Also since my monitor was not listed (HANNS-G) I used the vesa monitor settings.

I'd try and get either vesa or nv driver before installing the NVIDA driver.

Fix one thing at a time.

I have tested vesa driver in several distros/machines. Vesa works much better than native drivers except for ATI and nVidia Cards.
One should install Nvidia driver only. vesa and nv drivers do not support 3D effects and X Server uses more CPU cycles.

Okay, I installed the NVIDIA Drivers, and the drivers seem to be a success. However, I noticed that the OpenSUSE's start button does not display, and when I click in that area, the start menu appears, but it is not attached to the taskbar. Is this a GUI error? Also, I installed Beryl (for the 3D effects) from *opensuse-xgl-settings KDE-Apps.org, and ran the program. I tried configuring the settings, and after I restarted, the same problem appeared with my system; a black/blank screen. Therefore, it doesn't seem that there is a problem between the connectivity of the video card and my monitor (running in VGA-mode). Are there any fixes for these issues?

    Please let me know,
And always, thank you all that have contributed so far!
