Kaffeine or VLC?
I have Suse 12.2.
I have some films, some of them as mp4 files. When I click
on one of them, kaffeine gets activated, and then I
immediately get a little window saying
"Checking for additional software", and I'm in Yast. It then
shows me a small list of stuff, but whatever I do, it goes
into a cycle, ending with the same message. SOmewhere alongf the cycle, I get a screen with the film. When I then
try to play the film, by clicking on the "GO" arrow bottom
left, I get the film title and again the GO arrow.
If kaffeine is regarded as the default program to run films,
why doesn't it work, and/or how do I get it to work? I have
sudo zypper install kaffeine
and it tells me that there is nothing new to install.
OK, I can run the film with VLC media player, and I should
therefore make that the default. How do I do that?
If you right-click the media file and select 'Properties' there should be a tab on the info box that lets you pick your preferred default application. You'll need to set it separately for each media type (.avi, .mp4, etc.)
I always use vlc to play video media, as its the most consistent - it seems to play everything with no additional codec downloads needed.
OK, thanks, but what is kaffeine good for?

You'll need to install multimedia codecs there are 2 repos to try
Index of /suse/Factory/
Or thePackman Tumbleweed:
Index of /suse/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/
One more thing is if you have VLC did you get it from the Packman repos?
If not use Yast to remove it, if Yast crashes on you(a known bug) use zypper the CLI would be
But my main point to you is this if you want stability remove 12.2 and replace it with 12.1 acquaint yourself with Opensuse. IT is a decent little distro.
