midnight commander

i was in the command terminal and i noticed the midnight commander under session. It bought up this neat looking blue screen heh. Can midnight commander be used to unzip files and use tar.gz files cause im not figuring out how to get them working. If it can be used to unzip files and use tar.gz files can someone give me step by step. I got suse linux 9.1 pro.

midnight commander can enter the tar files and then you can copy the contents of that file to a location using f5
