Good morning everyone

I've just had Ubuntu installed on my WinXP PC and I am amazed at the simplicity and efficiency of this OS.
I downloaded the file AVG75flm-r45-a0973-i386.rpm to install The antivirus,but the system doesn't recognise the file and cannot install it.
Since I'm all new to it,could somebody help?

HI and Welcome !

There is no need to install any AntiVirus Package in Linux. I have never installed any package till now. Check this Short Security Guide. You can install rkhunter to keep check on rootkits.

Ubuntu is Debian based and supports .deb packages only. You can covert .rpm to .deb with alien.

I am with Casper on this one. There is no need for antivirus on Linux unless you are running a mail or file server that shares files with Windows clients, or you regularly transfer files between Linux and Windows.

sdim... alien is an application that will allow your debian based ubuntu distro to read *.rpm files which are by default made for "red hat" based distros hence the name RPM (redhat package manager) debian is just a different... engine for your car. like a rotary engine will do the same thing a piston engine would...

as for viruses, linux viruses are not... mainstream, but they are coming. the biggest threat to linux (IMHO) is probably rootkits, but I'm not 100% sure, I believe that rootkits behave differently to a virus. (but please correct me if I'm wrong) there are a lot of other ways of securing your linux box without the need for an AV program.
