Lexmark printer does not work properly. Does not do direct print jobs.

Good evening.s

I am trying to install a Lexmark printer to a laptop.

The tespages are: Some are very good, and ohters are only ok.

A few times, I had to delete printing jobs, which where in the queue.

Someting is wrong with the transfer.

I downloadede, unzipped and installed the software from the website of Lexmark.

Inside of my Linux distro ("SimplyMEPISS 6.5"Linux), I am able to choose from a many printers, but my exact model is not listed.

My computer is a IBM ThinkPad T41.

Later this evening, I found the System Log, and had a look at it: Could anybody figure out, what my problem is, and leave ma a comment? Thank you so much.

Kind regards
Alexander

Inside of my Linux distro ("SimplyMEPISS 6.5"Linux), I am able to choose from a many printers, but my exact model is not listed.
Look in your drivers listing again and try experimenting with some different drivers such as those for the E250d, E250dn, and the E352dn. Maybe one of them will work. I'm pretty sure you should be able to print without too many problems with that printer.

Edit: What driver are you using now? Is it a PPD file, or something else?

Hello dear Ozar,
thank you so much, for your reply:
I will try them out, if necessary.
The "dn"-models, are for network, I think, but they might be ok for me.
I don't use a network right now.
The wifi card, I might leave inside of the laptop. and try to turn it off with the software "update-rc.d".

Actually, I allready am quite close to those two models that you recommend to me.
I wonder if the extra features for network capacitiy might be able to get the problem better fixed.

Well, it seems, that I am pretty close to a solution. I heard of other people struggling for months to get their printer running on Linux, but for me, it will then only have been a week of frustration and painstaking work, I hope.

I must say, that your kind words encourage me, and give me a lot of comfort and confidence, in a such a situation, where many people would just feel completly lost in nowhereland.

And you are right: This very good printer (up to 28 pages per minute) seems to have a lot of hidden qualities, like a very good and reliable car, and one would actually not expect, that it would let you down, trying to work and harmonise with a Linux OS, and I believe, that it is trying very hard, to complete the job/mission as well.

Thank you so much. I greatly appreciate your support.

Kind regards

Alexander

There shows to be an actual driver for your printer on this driver downloads page, but it might be what you already have:

Lexmark Lexmark E350d Driver Summary

I can't vouch for the quality of this driver at all, but though you might want to know about it. I'm not sure where they got it from, either.

P.S.:

The actual driver I am experimenting with, is for a Lexmark E210 (I have a E350d, though).

No, it is not a PPD file, I think. You have to download it, unzipp it, and then have it in a folder in your file system.

It is made for quite a few Linux distros, and one has to copy and paste a chunk of script into to the installer script, but it does not concern my distro, so I just leave it the way it is, probably would not be able to benefit from some of those changements.

The idea, is that the driver could benefit from the pre configuration on the OS, that should fit to it: So if you got a strong team, or just two parts that harmonise good together, this fact might be able to balance out the disadvantage of being a distro not specifically made for my printer, but for a different model with less performance and which is "less on the high end side". But anyway, if it can make my printer print, it can make me happy as well, nevertheless, for which model that driver had been designed.

Bye for now, and cheers.

Take a look at the info on the bottom of this page about the E352dn printer driver that's recommended:

OpenPrinting database - Printer: Lexmark E352dn

If you can get the actual PPD file for your printer, you can move it to /usr/share/cups/model then restart cups or reboot and your printer should be in the printer list.

Thank you very much, for the link for the distro, Ozar: It will be worth a try.

Specially, if it is more like the made to mesure driver, and not a "one size fits all"-driver, where the chances might be smaller, to be able to succeed.

Hi Ozar, thanks, I shall have a look and probably a go at the second driver you recommend. And I would also try to follow those steps.

I shall let you know, in within a day, how I was able to proceed.

Hello Ozar,
I tryed to order that CD, and pay online with PP, but the invoice/bill was not linked to my online account, so it did not work.

Should I want to buy it, I could send you 3$ instead of the two, give you my email address, and you could maybe foreward me the code for downloading the file.

Well, first I shall try then with the second one.

Maybe they are just using the same driver like Lexmark offers for free download.
But maybe not.

Thank you.

No, I wouldn't pay for the driver at all if I were you. I really didn't realize that site charged for their drivers, either. You can most likely get what you need for free, somewhere.
