Do you have an internet connection on this box? Ubuntu will attempt to install the proper drivers for you with its "Restricted Driver Manager," which is somewhere in the System menu if I'm not mistaken.

What version of Ubuntu do you have?

You should be able to just check the "Enable" check box, but if it says "will not enable", that might mean that Ubuntu couldn't automatically set it up. There are several options for installing proper drivers. One is a program called Envy, which I've tried but never gotten to work, personally.

The other way is to download the driver yourself from the ATI website and follow the instructions they give. The last time I did this the installer gave me a graphical Next->Next->Finish kind of installer similar to what you're used to in MS Windows. To do this, go here:

Drivers & Software

Choose "Linux X86", then "Radeon", then "ATI Radeon 9500 Series" and it should let you download the installer.

I have downloaded the ATI driver and it is on my desk top. When I try to run it by double clicking I cet a error saying could not open, please check you are not trying to open binary file. It then asks that I select the caracter coding and try again. I have tried this and it does not work any ideas?

You'll need to launch it from a terminal window with root privileges. Do this by launching Terminal, then running your .SH or .BIN file like so:

Code:
sudo chmod +x nameOfYourDriverFile.sh
sudo ./nameOfYourDriverFile.sh
Password: <enter your user password>
A graphical Next->Next->Finish window should pop up and guide you through the install.

The file I downloaded was ati-driver-installer-7-11-x86.x86_64.run (on to the desk top).

I think I need a path or something because when I enter the filename in the provided code it says it can't find the file. The file is located as '/home/steve/Desktop/' do I just procede the file name with the path in the supplied code?

You have downloaded the 64-bit driver. Are you running 64-bit Ubuntu? If not you need to download the regular X86 version, not X86_64.

If you download the driver to your desktop, the path to it would be:

/home/steve/Desktop/ati-driver-installer-7-11-x86.x86_64.run

Good news, well almost!
Following your instructions I got the ATI installer to run. It gives two radio buttons to either install driver or to generate a package specific driver. I assume the former is correct.

However, the 'cancel' and 'OK' buttons are off the bottom of the display (640x480), the panel can not be resized, therefore I can not continue with the ATI installation. Is ther a key short cut to send the 'OK' command? or any other ideas?

Well, that is an interesting problem. You might be able to tab select the "Continue" button by hitting tab a few times. Here's a picture of what the window is supposed to look like:
