sound in players independent of volume control buttons in ubuntu gutsy

i am a beginner in linux arena.
i previously used feisty (ubuntu 7.04) for a few weeks.
then i switched to gutsy (ubuntu 7.10).
the problem is my laptop volume buttons dont control the volume of the applications.
i have searched for some solution in previous posts.
wat i learnt was :there are two volume options (or whatever)MASTER & PCM
my laptop buttons control only the MASTER.
the applications are controlled by PCM volume level.
i dont know how the settings were in previous feisty, but my laptop buttons could change volume of applications.
i couldn't do it in gutsy.
someone help me.
if u could explain to me what MASTER & PCM do , it would be helpful.
if there is any mistake in what i have understood & stated above please tell me.
the following thread is related
