I'm a recent convert of linux from XP and I am have a problem getting my nvidia graphics card working. It's clear by my google and forum searches that this is a common thing, but either my unfamiliarity with how linux functions or some other problem is preventing me from getting it going.

The goal is to enable my second monitor on my workstation.

When i enabled the driver in the Restricted Drivers prompt and let linux do its thing, upon restart i simply had a black screen on the primary screen.

Using Envy, I was able to enable the second screen but when i was adjusted the resolution i got 'locked' into a very low resolution 640 x 480.

I'm really not sure how to tackle this. Thanks for any help. I'm using 7.10 build of Unbuntu Desktop.

I believe you need to install the nvidia-glx-legacy driver and remove the nvidia-glx-new packages - your card is on the legacy support list. You should be able to do this in synaptic...if you can't see the whole screen you can move the window around by alt+left clicking on the window.

i installed the legacy driver but the nvidia-glx-new package wasn't installed to begin with. The only other thing installed was the nvidia-kernel-common and i figured i should leave it alone.

Once that's done what is the next step? Enabling it in the Restricted Drivers Manager?

I don't know if it makes a difference, but the card itself is a Jaton 3DForce 4 MX440Twin using the GeForce4 MX440 GPU

Ok, Both screens are working but both are in 640 x 480 resolution

Update. I selected the specific monitors instead of using the Plug n play setting and I was able to set the resolution to 1024 x 768 for both screens. Yay!

But now the area of the desktop is 'bigger' than the screen. i.e. i have to pan to the right in order to see the right 1/6 of the taskbar.

Ok, everything seems stable when using just one screen but when using the dual screen feature any or all of the following happens:

1. Both screens randomly turn off and on
2. Desktop does not fit default screen
3. mouse pointer arrow is offset from where it actually active on the screen.

Now it won't even boot. Game over.
