[SOLVED] Failed to start the X server

Hi everyone. I just installed Ubuntu using Wubi, and I got the dual OS screen upon restart just as normal but I keep getting this "Failed to start the X server" prompt whenever I boot.

I say "yes" to viewing the server output to diagnose the problem and this is what is shown:

(EE) NV(0): No display devices found
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal Server error:
no screens found

Then all I have is an "<ok>" on the bottom of the screen, which when I click takes me to a prompt with "Would you like to view the detailed X server output as well". On saying yes it shows me a large log, and at the bottom I get the same "Screens found but none have a usable configuration." message and another "<ok>" button. After clicking that I get a message saying that the X server was disabled and I'm returned to a black and white screen which has messages like

* Checking Battery state ... [ ok ]
* Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) [ ok ]

where I can't type anything.

The thing is, I also have a CD and when I boot from that, everything works properly, I have a GUI, and I can perform all tasks normally.

I've looked up this error online and people recommend that the xorg.conf file is modified but there's no prompt (using the normal ubuntu startup) that I can do this through. I could try to boot off of the cd and modify the file I suppose, but I'm not sure if that would work.

Is there any way to solve this issue? Please let me know if theres any more information that you need. Thanks for all your help and advice beforehand.

-LP

Press Alt+Ctrl+F1. Does it drop you at command line login prompt?
If yes, log in there and execute this to re-configure display settings.
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo shutdown -r now
In case X Server throws error again or Alt+Ctrl+F1 doesn't work, boot up from LiveCD, open Terminal and execute this
Code:
sudo lspci | grep -i vga
Post output here.

That was brilliant! I did exactly what you said in the beginning, and was able to get into a command prompt after logging in. I started configuring the xserver, reboot and got the GUI to work perfectly. Thanks so much!
