Failed to start X Server

hi, i just also installed ubuntu through wubi

had the same exact problem ,and tried to do what ghost suggested to lurker partrol

but as im going through the configuration options after i type the dpkg reconfigure command, when it goes to the screen when it asks me to select a color depth, it shows a command promp at the bottom of the screen, and wont let me select the color depth.

in the line, it says something like

"overwritting possibly - customized configuration file; backup in etc/x11/xorg configuration. 20080407054459

i think i did something wrong

Try to edit xorg.conf file manually.
Execute this
Code:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Set DefaultDepth to 16.
Code:
Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"xxxx Screen"
	Device "xxxx"
	Monitor "xxxxx Monitor"
	DefaultDepth	16
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth 16
		Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth 24
		Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768"
	EndSubSection
EndSection
Press Ctrl+X, Y and hit Enter key to save file.
