Well, I've tried installing "nvidia-glx-new" using Synaptic, but that's not resolved it.

Also, it seems I don't even have the Restricted Drivers Manager menu option! I used to have it with v7.x.

I think it's just called Hardware Drivers now and lives on the System > Administration menu.

It's been renamed to "Hardware Drivers", I believe. It's still there. Your card is a Broadcom chipset. I have a Broadcom as well (though it's a different model). In order to get mine working I had to install ndiswrapper. You'll also need a copy of the Microsoft Windows drivers, usually from the CD that came with your computer. You might also be able to download them off HP's website.

You can get ndiswrapper off of Synaptic Package Manager if you add the your Hardy Heron CD as a software source. If you have regular wired internet, you can just download it through Synaptic off one of the mirrors. Ubuntu 8.04 has a graphical tool called gtkndis (I think that's the name) that will help you get the drivers installed.

Thanks. I disabled the driver from there, then re-enabled it. No errors, but I think a reboot is necessary.

Nice. Now the only problem is finding the Windows drivers. As this is a Vista enabled PC it uses the MS generic drivers so I'm having to search them out.

So, I failed to get the sound working nor the display back to form nor the wireless.

I felt I was left with little alternative but to reinstall Ubuntu. There are various upsides to this.

1 - The sound works!
2 - The display works nicely again!
3 - I added a seperate partion for /home!
4 - I added a seperate Fat32 partition for sharing files with Windows!

That just leaves the wireless. Does anyone know how to find out which files I need from Vista (bearing in mind Vista now uses built-in drivers so it's either impossible or very difficult to find the driver installer)?

Hmmm.. There's no way you can download drivers from the manufacturer? It's going to be hard (if not impossible) to find the individual INF an SYS files you'll need for that wireless card in the Vista file structure.

Nope. The HP link on the website for the wireless card just goes to a page stating that there are no drivers to download as it uses the built-in drivers.

This is so frustrating!

You might see if you can just download some generic Broadcom drivers somewhere for your chipset (BCM94311MCG). You'll need an INF file and maybe the corresponding SYS file as well to get Ndiswrapper working.

Hmm, well I managed to identify the .sys, .inf and .dll files in my Vista install. Copied them over. Run NDISWrapper (which seems to list itself as "Windows Wireless Drivers") but get an error: "Invalid driver" which I suspect is due to the fact I'm running Ubuntu 64bit but the Vista is only 32bit.

Still trying to work out how to get the files out of the .exe I've found with CabExtract.
