Upgrade from 7.x to 8.04 degrades my display

Hi, all.

Having found the original install of Ubuntu quite straightforward - apart from the wireless and audio, neither of which I'd spent much time on since - I felt little trepidation in upgrading to 8.04 via t'internet (and was also hoping that the upgrade would get my wireless and audio working, by the by).

Anyway, during the install I was prompted as to whether I wanted to keep the menu.lst file (which I did) so I was pretty confident that other settings would be kept too.

Alas that doesn't seem to be the case as upon reboot the system started to ask me about which Gfx card I have and what sort of monitor. Trying various card and monitors didn't get me very far and just reminded me of my the earlier days of trying out various distros of Linux and NEVER getting a completely clear display with a mouse pointer that looked like an actual arrow.

I'm left with an 800x600 display instead of a 1280x720 (or x800) display. I didn't get to try out the Compiz desktop effects but I doubt they'll work.

So, can anybody help me get this darn display working again, please?

Here are the specs of my laptop:
Product Name HP G6032EA (Product Number: GZ974EA)
Microprocessor AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK53 Mobile Technology
Microprocessor Cache 512 KB Level 2 cache
Memory 2048 (2 x 1024 MB)
Memory Max Up to 1 GB
Video Graphics NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100
Video Memory Up to 336 MB
Display 15.4” WXGA High Definition BrightView Widescreen (1280 x 800)
Network Card Ethernet 10/100BT integrated network interface
Wireless Connectivity 802.11b/g WLAN
Sound 3D Sound Blaster Pro compatible sound 16 bit integrated

TIA

JJ

Hi and Welcome !

You have to re-install Nvidia Driver.
System --- Administration -- Restricted Drivers Manager. Select Nvidia and hit Apply.

you need to install the nvidia driver in your synaptic package manager

I believe it is called nvidia-glx-new you need to enable restricted driver section

then you need to edit xorg.conf file to use driver "nvidia" instead of whatever other driver you are using for your graphics card

By the way, any ideas about the wireless card and the audio? I'm optimistic the audio should be fairly easy as it looks like a pretty ubiquitous card, but the wireless card description is vague as to almost be useless (and HP don't support it outside of Windows, surprise, surprise)

Do you know specifically what kind of wireless chipset you have? The output of this command might help you with that:

Code:
lspci
Some popular ones are Atheros, Broadcom, and Intel. If we know what chipset you use we can direct you to the proper tool to get it working. I've not yet run into a wireless chipset that simply refused to work in Linux.

That was exactly the information I tried to get out of HP but they just told me the model name as per the specs list above.

But that was before I new about the lspci command you just gave me!

I'll let you know what I find when I get home (in about 60-75 minutes).

I had the same problem, but after installing "nvidia-glx-new" using Synaptic I was able to see all required resolutions! Ubuntu rocks!
