| I'm running Debian 4.0 on a 550mhz PIII system with an Ati Rage128 AGP card. I'm using the "ati" driver (open source), that installed out-of-box. 3d screen savers work with good performance, but there are hardware limitations on how high the resolution/screen depth can be while having 3d acceleration. 1400x1050x16 is too high; 1024x768x16 is not too high.
I have also tried changing the driver to "r128", with no difference in performance.
With a clean Debian 4.0 install, the only thing I needed to change was the driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the default "vesa" to "ati". Actually, I don't remember whether I needed to do that. Usually, Debian 4.0 installs with "vesa" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf regardless of the video hardware.
