Unhappy Ubuntu 7.10 live cd not working properly! Please help

hi,

I tried the Ubuntu 7.10 live cd in my system with the configuration: 256 ram, 40 gb hd, Intel Pentium 4, 2.4 Ghz, Mercury motherboard.
When I loaded the cd with the first option 'Start or Install'. The loading happened with a login music, but only the mouse pointer was visible in a black screen, nothing else happened after that.
When I tried the second option 'safe graphical mode', the loading happened and an error was thrown with some file missing error message.

What is the problem I'm facing ? Is it the problem with the cd or my system ? Will I be not able to install Ubuntu in my system ?

Check if your installation cd or dvd is not scratched other wise there might be a problem with your hardware

The recommended amount of RAM for the live cd is 384MB, so running it on 256MB will probably result Ubuntu being a bit sluggish. Try a different disc and if you face similar problems, try a newer version of Ubuntu (8.04 came out a few weeks ago) or a different distro.

I have this problem too. I've tried it on my brand new rig I put together, an older gateway desktop, and a really old (P3) gateway laptop, all three with the same black screen after the music. Could it be a display driver problem?

I too suspect the same...whether its a graphics card problem or the display driver problem !
