8.04 Installation

I have an Intel Dual Core 2.0, hyperthreading, 4 Gig memory, SataII WD 320 HD, Windows XP Professional X64 on the drive. However, when I installed 8.04 X64 I have a problem. I am new to LINUX, but have tried PCLINUXOS, Xandros, Fiesty Fawn and Gibbon. I like what I see for the most part and I want to pull the plug on Redmond.

My problem with 8.04 X64 in Internet connection. I have played around with the Internet manager and Internet tools, but not connection. The tools indicate I'm getting 100% pin to ine? DNS and shows my hardware (MAC address.)

I really want to get away from Redmond in the worst way. Would any of you professional users please help this newbe? Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated. (P.S. I first installed 8.04 X32 and had the same problem.)

The major key may be the I am using an AT&T Gagteway (gateway.2.wire.com) which is router and modem in one. I did configure the gateway in Windows prior to installation of 8.04.

Should I go back to Linksys router and Siemens Modem? I have another desktop with adaptor for my grandson--also he WII. Thanks again and forgive me if I am a pain in this case.
