Angry Totem movie player will not play DVD's! ANd it will not download the right codecs!AH!

well i recently instaled ubuntu 7.10 on an old Dell Opti Plex, it started up fine but it will not play dvd's for some reason. It said it needed to install cocdecs but would not let me hit the install button. I hooked the pc up to the internet through my home net work but that didn't help

Download them separately with the command APT-GET
or go to Debian Multimedia Packages::Home and download all the packages there.

It's much easier than trying to let a program to install them for you.

How do you know what to download and how install

OK so Totum doesnt play DVD or MPEG or AVI or WMV and says I need to download codacs and following the download nothing works?

Why prompt for download if it is not going to achieve playback? Is there something i am missing?

The advise is download the updates yourself, however how do you know what to download and how to apply the download?

When you have got t:grin the .DEB file what do you do next to achieve playback?

Many Thanks

Send a message via Yahoo to devils casper
I would suggest you to install VLC Player. It will install necessay codecs.
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

Hi,

Totem doesn't install what you need because you probably don't have the right repositories enabled. Enable the multiverse, universe repositories as well as Medibuntu repositories, and install the right packages including:
libdvdcss2
libdvdnav4
non-free-codecs
w32codecs

ok...

system>administration>synaptic package manager

input the root password, then go to settings>repositories

make sure the boxes are all ticked in both the ubuntu software tab and the third party software tab.

close it, press reload.

search for gstreamer0.10-plugins.

select the good, bad and ugly and base sets from there

apply those.

try totem again.

if not, repeat the process installing xine instead

if not, try a different media player. I find the xine player good for dvds. the package name is xine-ui

to clear up confusion, xine is a way of playing media, xine-ui is the player for it.

I found that after doing all this, totem eventually started playing dvds....

Sometimes Totem will download the updates but you need to restart the media player before it would work. I had such a case yesterday when Totem would not play Mpeg 4 with video, only sound. So I installed the recommended plugins/codecs and yet the problem was persistent until I quit Totem and opened the video again.

Also install libdvdcss2.

Post Totum still not playing ball

Hi

I tried the suggestions of Luke58 & X1A4 (thanks for your suggstions) and made some progress as I can play MPEG videos with good sound and video. WMA files play with audio only showing visualisations like when I paly MP3 audio files. Putting in a standard audio CD returns the cryptic error message "Location not found" which I have searched on Google finding many others reporting the same error but remarkably no solutions!

What Totem can't play a simple Audio CD? Does it support WMA format?

I guess I will have to look at VLC Player however surely Totem cannot be that broken?
