Amd athlon 64x 2

I feel restarted asking but i want to learn i have a Amd athlon 64x2. So i should download "64bit AMD and Intel computers" Aslo should i check the box that says Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer. i am trying to install this on my desktop? please help.

I would suggest you to download i386 only. Its a 32bit version and works perfectly on 64bit machine. There are a few problems in 64bit version. Check here.

A few Nvidia and ATI cards do not work well with LiveCDs and Alternate Installation CD is the solution for that. Alternate installation CD is for Desktop only. Go for LiveCD if you want to test hardware before installation.

Yes you should download the AMD64 bit version.

The alternate CD is good if you want to enable full disk encryption and have more customisation of the install process. Stick to the live CD if you are unsure.

You can use either the regular 32-bit version or the 64-bit version on your CPU. There is no significant performance difference in either right now that I can tell.

The alternate desktop CD will boot up with a non-graphical text installer and only let you install Ubuntu. The LiveCD on the other hand will let you boot into a full desktop operating system and play around with it before you install. This is helpful if you want to make sure for instance that your wireless and sound cards are supported. The installer is graphical on the LiveCD.

As I mentioned earlier, package support for 64bit version is not good right now. There is no 64bit Flash plug-in, Adobe reader and a few other packages. There are a few workarounds but performance of those package is not satisfactory. Btw, thats my personal experience only.

Ditto what Casper has been saying. Unless you are an advanced user that enjoys modifying packages to get them to work, I'd stick with the i386 (32 bit) install. Many apps do not have 64 bit packages and many that do require a large amount of tweaking to get working.

Actually, no, casper and I agree that in general the safer bet is to use the 32-bit version right now. If you want to run 64-bit, you can, and in my recent experience with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my laptop, I can say that you probably won't have any trouble. The *potential* for trouble is greater with 64-bit, is all I was trying to say.

And no, the 64-bit version will not run noticeably faster than the 32-bit one, in my experience.

Regardless of what you choose, if you need help at any point just post back here and we'll do our best to get you going.
