tar / tape input output error

i have 2 tape drives and both fail on doing a tar system bu. small files work ok. i get a input output error after it runs a little while 20-30 minutes. i have also tried star and mondo-- ng! i think it may have to do with buffering or the streamer not controlling the data. can anyone suggest how to fix, where to go or other information.

thanks hubie

Do you have SCSI input/output errors in the /var/log/messages file? If so, you likely have a HW problem. You may want to check your SCSI cabling, terminators, etc.
