alsaconf gave me "command not found"

I installed OSS v4, and that "almost" worked. When I went to system>>preferences>>sound and clicked the test buttons, I got the standard tone, and that was the most exciting thing.

I tried to get it to play some system wav files, but they didn't make any noise. Then I got on youtube, and still no sound.

When I tried to check the volume I got these two errors:

"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This either means that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."

"No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found."

Back at the sound preferences windo, I notice that there is no device selected under Default Mixer Tracks. There was nothing to select in the drop-down menu either.

I think I"m close to finally having sound though. I hope so.

Anyways, here is the output of ossinfo:

Open Synaptic and install everything beginning with "gstreamer" and "libgstreamer". It's really easy, no command line necessary. Then reboot and try again using oss.

If you can get system sounds with oss, but nothing else that's gotta be something with the oss volume controls. In this tutorial they talk about a patch to fix that problem.

Try this command: "sudo soundon"

If that doesn't work, try this tutorial:

wesley, you are my sonic savior.

I tried the soundon, but that didn't help, because the sound was already on. However, after following steps 8-10 in the link, installing the volume control patch, and Flash support, things finally got to working.

And it sounds good. Thanks a ton!
