Sound issues in 8.04

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my computer, but I'm not getting any sound, except out of the front headphone jack. I tried all the things on this page:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

but it was of no help.

When I run aplay -l, I get this output:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC882 Analog [ALC882 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC882 Digital [ALC882 Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 0 is by Realtek and is integrated onto my Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R motherboard. card 1 is integrated into my Gigabyte Radeon HD3850 Video Card.

I went to Realtek's site, and downloaded their linux driver, which was really just an ALSA driver, and that didn't get me any sound. card 0 is connected to an Onkyo 605 Receiver, via optical cable, and the video card (card 1) is connected to the receiver by DVI to HDMI.

I posted this in Ubuntu Forums a couple of days ago, but no one's responded. Anyone here have any suggestions? I'm pretty excited about having a Linux system, and I'd hate to go back to Windows just to get some sound.

Please post the output of the commands lspci and also alsamixer.

Try:

Backup /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base ...and add:

snd-hda-intel model=3stack

reboot.

I tried those commands, but there was still no sound. In the original alsabase, I had

Try installing the esounds package. If esounds doesn't fix it, post the output of lsmod please.

Have you verified that you are in the audio group? If not

Code:
sudo adduser taesen00 audio
Note that you must log off and back on for the changes to take effect.

Next, run the following command and follow the instructions:

Code:
sudo alsaconf
Also, sounds obvious but we all fall for it at least once!, have you checked that the sound isn't muted? Type

Code:
alsamixer
in a terminal and check that the Master and PCM channels don't have MM written below them. If they do, press m to unmute them.

Here's another question: do you hear the Ubuntu jingle when your computer starts up?

I am a member of the audio group. I got an error message saying alsaconf could not be found. All the necessary channels are unmuted. Perhaps alsaconf will help? What do I need to install that?

I don't hear any jingle, but I checked, and it's supposed to play.

You can run "sudo alsaconf" in terminal to see if it starts. Have you tried using oss instead of alsa? Everything From what I found, OSS works better with your card. If the command above doesn't work, go to system >> prefrences >> sound and try changing it to oss. If that doesn't work, please post the output of "sudo ossinfo -v3". All commands are without the quotes of course. I just put them there so the command is clear.
