[SOLVED] A few newbie hitches.

Hi,

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my PC (installed inside MS Windows). This is my first examination of Linux systems so I faced to some difficulties...

I have Radeon 2600Pro graphic card. When I tried to run downloaded from the official site drivers (.run type) in Terminal Ubutu told me that I should run this installer as the super-user. I thought Ubuntu means I need to login as root. When I tried to do it Ubuntu said "The SA is not allowed to login from this screen". Therefore I have two questions:

1st: How should I run as root?
P.S.: I know I shouldn't do that (especially for my level), I just want to know how to do it =)

2nd: How can I lunch the .run-installator of my graphic card drivers?

Thank you for your attention.

Welcome to the forums Debosheer

You should not login as root, in Ubuntu you use sudo to gain root access rights. To run a command as root you type
Code:
sudo command_name
. You also need to make sure the file has executable attributes ... the chmod command will allow you top change the attributes. Type
Code:
man chmod sudo
for more information on the chmod and sudo commands.

If you are changing graphics drivers you will normally need to do this by pressing ctrl+alt+f1 and login as your normal user. The GUI will need to be stopped but instructions for this are normally on the website you download the driver from.

You may be able to install the restricted drivers from the GUI ... I think its in system administration. If it is available then this is the easiest method to use.

Thank you for the hearty welcome!

The file is already switched as executable. What command should I use to lunch the .run-installer?

Oh! "It's alive!.. (c) Hah...

So I've installed ati-drives but all serious graphical applications still work as a slide-show. When I run ATI Catalyst Control Center it says:

"Catalyst Control Center for Linux initialization failed. ATI graphical driver is not installed or functions incorrectly."

What do I need to do to joy a real-time application working?

Oh, I've just solved my hitch by using that installation guide! Now, the "grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf" derives

Driver "kbd"
Driver "mouse"
Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
Driver "fglrx"

Sincere gratitude to all!
