Sound Juicer non-respond

Hello to all.

While running Feisty from the disk I had no problems playing or extracting from audio disks. After installing Feisty, things have changed.

Last evening I placed a data cd in one of my two optical drives. I had no problems viewing the data, which was in the form of jpg photos. Afterwords, I placed an audio disk into the same drive. The audio disk was "seen" by the computer and listed the tracks on the disk. The computer also seemed to be offering the option of either playing or extracting the audio. But when I selected either of those options, neither option would function. Instead, "Sound Juicer" hung up and a forced quit was required.
Moments ago I re-installed Sound Juicer from the Synaptic Pkg Mngr and tried to play the same audio disk. It still fails to respond to the play button. A new development, though, is that the "extract" button is functioning. I clicked upon it and allowed it to copy 2 audio tracks to the desktop. The bad news is, still neither of these tracks will play.

Anyone have any idea what I might need to do to repair this?

I haven't seen that before but there are two things to try.
  • Run dmesg in a terminal immediately after inserting a disc and look for any errors (post it back here for help)
  • Cancel the prompt to extract and instead run sound-juicer in a terminal so that you can see any errors it produces.

additionally...

I failed to mention that running sound-juicer from the terminal yielded no error messages. Only one thing worth mentioning is:
fastbullet@The:~$ sound-juicer
Killed
fastbullet@The:~$ sound-juicer
Killed
fastbullet@The:~$
This only occurs when, after play is selected and fails to start, I attempt to close sound juicer and restart it. Of course, I get the "fail to respond" message and use the force quit. This "killed" notation in terminal is the result of the forced quit..

The attached screen shots are not terribly enlightening but you can see from them the way selecting "play" darkens the play button.

Is your CD spinning while it says it's hanging?

Good Morning,

Sometimes I ca be such a terrible dimwit.
Answering your question, though, no it is not. When first placed into the machine, it spins long enough to read and then it stops. Click on play, and it never restarts.
However, click on extract and it spins it's silent littls arse off.

As to being a dimwit, I spent 10 minutes listening to and feeling for a vibration from the two drives and it took me that long to look at the freaking light...
Ah, well, I'm only on my first coffee, thus far.
As we say in texas, "That's my story and I'm stickin' to it"

No, unfortunately

While the disc spins up for extraction, it does not start spinning for play.
Additionally, the music tracks I have successfully extracted will not play, either. I have tried to play the extracted tracks in rythym box as well, but when I click play the machine hangs just as it does when trying to play directly from the disk with Sound Juicer.

There is something else I need to make you aware of, though I am uncertain that it belongs in this thread. Therefore, I will make brief mention of it and await your response. If you feel I need to take it elsewhere, I shall.

This morning, after my last post here, I got an "updates available" notification. When I opened it, it turned out to be an update from v 7.04 Feisty to v 7.10 Gutsy.
With the hope that this update might also repair some of the many headaches I'm having with Feisty, I went ahead with the updates.

I will leave that subject where it is for the time being to avoid any potential conflict with the Forums rules and let you or the Moderators make the call as to whether continuing with the subject will be a problem.

I will say that, while the same problem with Sound Juicer is still in evidence, at least one other problem (setting/re-setting of the clock) has been fixed- either by the update or by mysterious forces unknown to me. Oh, yes- and I was finally allowed into the restricted drivers where I was, at last, able to install the nvidia driver that had been missing.

NOW it works.

As I began to tell, I went ahead with the Gutsy updates. I was amazed at the number of updates and the 2 hours it took to get it done.
Well, Last night, after my last post, there were yet more updates for Gutsy which took another hour and a half. Yet even with all these updates, many of the features, including Sound Juicer and Totem movie player did not work.
Around noon today there were still more updates coming in and I downloaded/installed them.
Finally, at 14:20 this afternoon, I tried a CD in the machine. Sound Juicer opened in a "maximized' window state-which had never happened before. I took the change in appearence as a positive sign though, and sure enough, when I hit the play button the damn thing finally works.

Obviously, I haven't a clue as to what it was that made the thing go to working. Not a very scientific method to add gobs and gobs of stuff and then try to figure out which element of the gobs was responsible for the fix. But, at this point I don't much give a damn if I, or anyone else, ever figures it out. As long as Feisty has been in existence, one should reasonably expect that stuff like this would have long ago been rectified.
But thus far, my entire experience with Linux Ubuntu- Feisty Fawn, at any rate- has been an ongoing hairball. There is simply no reasonable explanation or excuse for it to take weeks to get a clock to set, a CD player to play, a log-on window to remain the same from log-on to log-on, etc, etc.

I want to send my sincere thanks and kudos to Bigtomrodney for his efforts in trying to disect, analyze and fix this freaking mess. (I'm certain I'll return with more).

Well that's one thing

Do you mind if I ask...how come you haven't tried Hardy? I suspect you'll get notifications for updates to move up to that next. The odd thing about the open source world is the development rate. You can have as many changes in a year as you might see in seven or eight years of Windows. I only mention this because issues are resolved, more hardware is supported and applications mature with every release.

When I first started using Linux a few years back it was often considered an achievement to have your graphics working at all We've kind of had the snowball effect where things are still accelerating all the time and things are getting better every day. Let me know if this problem comes up again or anything related and we can try to figure it out.

Good luck!
