Xubuntu find out video card driver and screen res

Xubuntu 8.04 - need to find the driver for my ati video card. Went to xorg.conf to have a look but all it says is "configured device" or "configured monitor" or whatnot.

So how would I discover which driver is being used?

Also want to change the offered screen res to 1280x800 but again, no info inxorg.conf and nowhere I can edit.

Any ideas?

Ta.

You are using the default driver if no driver is listed under devices.

To manually set the resolution add the relevant parts of this:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Modes "1280x800" "1024x768"
Depth 24
EndSubSection

Post your whole xorg.conf if you want us to rewrite for you.

X now configures cards/monitors on the fly unless you need to override it. Unfortunately this does make it difficult to find out what driver you are using. If you aren't having problems I wouldn't suggest writing/changing your xorg.conf.

You might check /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see any messages about the driver you're using.

Cheers for that, thought that would be the way to go.

bigtomrodney, I have no problem with the driver as such but I need to know what it is so I can blacklist it in acpi-support else my laptop suspend isn't going to work.

I'll check the logs when I get home.

Yup, driver mentioned in the logs, is the ati driver.

I modified the xorg.conf file and it bombed out to failsafe when x restarted. I think I'll perhaps leave it alone, tis only a few pixels!

Now to get suspend working.......
