I am having problems with my log files they have become huge. I have several programs that dump tons of stuff to the logs have a couple of questions.

I have setup bandwidth monitoring using webmin and it makes the logs very large. Why do things get logged in so many places? i see the bandwidth stuff in
/var/log/bandwith
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/kernel
also in dmesg

Next i have a noisy mail program that fills up

/var/log/messages
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/debug
/var/log/maillog
/var/log/mailprogram

I do nightly remote backups and this amount redundant constantly changing data is costing me alot of money.

Please how do i stop these programs from spewing logfiles everywhere.

how does logrotate help me with duplicate log entries should you not be pointing me to the syslog man page?

I want to fix what gets logged where not when to rotate the logs

Your logrotate should be compressing those log files weekly, but you can change them to daily. You should be able to change how webmin does its logging.

Webmin bandwidth monitoring just configures logging in iptables. Your system happens to have the iptables logging configured to log to a lot of places (that's probably unnecessary and undesirable for many reasons). Reconfigure it to log to the one place you want it to log. On many systems this is configured in the syslog.conf file--kern.LEVEL (where LEVEL is something like "warning" or similar--the levels are documented in the syslog man page, among other places, but I don't recall off-hand what level Webmin uses for its bandwidth log entries...probably worth looking at the generated iptables rules to find out).
