Playing games

Okay, I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 onto my laptop without much problem. It's a dual core with 3gb of RAM, if that's relavent. I've never seen linux loaded onto a decent computer and I wanted to see what it looked like and what it could do.

In the Add/Remove Programs module(?), there was a game called Warzone 2100. I tried running this and it seems like a great game, but several minutes into the game, it crashes(?) and drops back to the ubuntu desktop. No warning messages or error messages or anything.

I tried uninstalling it and loading the last stable release of the game, which I was then warned not to do but ignored the warning, and I get the same result. Curious if it was my computer's hardware or something, I booted off Vista (dual-boot) and downloaded a windows version. The game runs fine.

Any idea how I might have ubuntu configured incorrectly or is it an incompatibiltiy in the packages somewhere? Any thoughts?

I'd like to get rid of vista completely.

One of the first things I do when diagnosing a problem is to open up a terminal window and launch the program from there. You get to see a lot more of the system messages that way and perhaps you'll see your error.

This time I opened a terminal window and ran the program. (It took me awhile to figure out which command I was supposed to type. I thought it would be in /usr/bin but I was wrong. In the end, I copied the launcher from the applications window to the Desktop and then looked at its properties.)

I don't know why, but this time when it ran, instead of dropping me to the Ubuntu desktop, I instead got dumped back to the login screen. I typed my name and password and here I am again.

Any other ideas?

I tried to uninstall the game and Synaptic gave me this message:

E: timidity: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: exult: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

Since the game dissapeared from my Applications menu, I tried to then re-install the game. I tried re-installing the game from the Add/Remove Programs area and it gives me the same message as above. The game, however, still appears in the applications menu and still starts up.

Do you have desktop effects enabled? I have to turn them off to play games or it will crash X.

I am happy to report that I have finally played through the entire first mission of Warzone 2100 and am quite pleased. Thank you.

Apparently, the desktop effects and the game are somehow incompatible.

I'm still a little nervous that I can't uninstall, reinstall, or apparently update the game, but for now am quite pleased that I can play it and show it to my friends.
