ATI drivers don't work

I can't install my ATI drivers without linux booting to a black screen. I have tried the proprietary driver ubuntu recommends I use, and I have tried the opengl drivers direct from ATI's site. Neither will work. I also tried Envy and got the same result.

I am running Hardy Heron (8.04) and I installed it through Windows XP. I have a Pentium D Processor, 2 gb of Ram, plenty of HD space, and a Radeon 1650x Pro Graphics card.

Thanks in advance!

About a year ago i was trying to get the ati drivers to work properly (my system would lock up when anything 3d was on screen). I changed to a nvidia card and have since had no problems.

I'm not planning to buy a new video card any time soon, but when I do I'll consider that. Sadly though, it doesn't help me at the moment.

Thanks, for the links. I tried them all though, and I always had the same result! I think I may need to wait until I can use a different graphics card. (Several months probably)

Thanks!
