ubuntu 8.04 & usb Zoom 56k modem

I finally got the modem recognized by GNOME-ppp as device /dev/ttyACMO,
and could enter my isp phone, id, and password. It went off hook, dialed and connected but nowhere near 56kbps or even 40 yor 38. I am hayes command set challenged, since all I know is ATDT nnn-nnnn and ATZ as a setup command. The default on GNOME ppp for this modem (zoom 3095) is atqv1e1s0=0&c1&d2+fclass=0 thenatm1L3dt*(phone number)

I get a connection at about 2 kbps and don't know why.

Any Help?
